Cape Town World Design Capital 2014

We won (and I naturally choose to believe its because of the large yellow button on the top right hand corner of this page. Or perhaps its due the amazingly successful bid put together by a group of extremely talented designers through countless hours of dedication and work. You make the call). Instead of plowing forward with my own version of the events, I decided to let the experts handle it. This is the statement on the campaign's official web page:
"Cape Town has been named World Design Capital for the year 2014, ahead of fellow short-listed cities, Dublin and Bilbao. The sought-after accolade was awarded to the Mother City this morning at the International Design Alliance (IDA) Congress in Taipei. Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille, accepted the award on behalf of Cape Town, South Africa and the African continent.
In her acceptance speech De Lille said: “It is an honour for me to be addressing you here today as mayor of the first African city to be named a World Design Capital. A city belongs to its people and it must be designed for and with them and their communities. For many years, people have been applying innovative solutions to our challenges. They have been using design to transform various aspects of life. But they have often been working without an overarching social goal in mind.
“The World Design Capital bid process and title have helped to bring different initiatives together and have made us realise that design in all its forms, when added together, creates human and city development."

“The World Design Capital designation gives cities like Cape Town additional motivation to actively think of transformative design in development plans. We look forward to learning from other cities that are using design as a tool for transformation, including past winners Torino, Seoul and Helsinki and our fellow short-listed cities, Dublin and Bilbao. We are honoured to have been considered with them.”

Coral-lition

Clearly I've become a bit summer-obsessed. But in order to streamline my thoughts, I decided to approach it step by step. Or  trend by trend. Now, although coral has been on the scene (a bit) these past few seasons, I believe its going to be huge this summer (luckily my hopes have been confirmed in the Spring 2012 Alexandre McQueen collection). Whether you wear it on your lips, your hips, your nails or as a handbag, a pop of coral will revive your whole wardrobe. It's bright. It's young. It's vibrant. And it's pretty. Wearing a coral dress might seem daunting and better suited to darker skinned girls, but I think the right shade of coral can be pulled of by even the palest girl. Here is some inspiration on how to wear it:

Bright Eyes

Needless to say, my foray into thoughts of holidays yesterday kick started my longing for all things summer. Having classes end in approximately three weeks means I'm actually much closer to living the dream than I thought. But I still have nagging deadlines, so I can't afford to lose concentration just yet. But as everyone knows, any successful venture- even if its just optimising my December holiday pleasure- requires planning. And that's why I started planning: my wardrobe. With sunglasses. So here are a couple I found intriguing:

Life's a Beach

My favourite time of the year is soon approaching: my December holiday. Since I was a child, the countdown to sea, sand and sun began as soon as school ended. The seemingly endless days, the cool water, the colourful umbrellas and the bucket loads of ice cream made my heart skip a beat. Later, my love of bikini's, summer dresses, hats and sunglasses joined the already amazing line-up. Needless to say, the fact that we are reaching the end of October is making my heart race just a bit more. So, instead of completely losing focus and day dreaming of the good times to come in the next few months, I chose to look at pictures instead. Here they are:
